Competency Profile for Financial Management   (FY2004)

Missouri Business Education Association (MBEA) passed a resolution in July 2002 stating, “Missouri Business Education Association and Missouri Business Education teachers assist in resolving the critical need for economics and personal finance education by offering a capstone course in economics and personal finance as a required public high school course prior to a student's high school graduation.” In 2002, the National Business Education Association developed a Policy Statement emphasizing the need for “business educators to accept the leadership role in personal and business financial education.”

Business education teachers have traditionally taught financial concepts in various courses. They are now seeking to make coverage of these critical competencies more visible in their schools by providing a separate course. Such efforts should insure that their students would be able to answer high percentages of questions about financial matters. This project is developing a competency profile for Financial Management or Banking and Financial Services, as some area career and technical schools have named their course.

A committee made up of Business Education instructors and practitioners are guiding the development of the profile. The project director is Dr. Larae Watkins, MCCE.
