Teacher Education Course Competencies for Marketing Education

Traditional coursework in teacher preparation is based on credit hour generation with a content outline largely derived from past courses. With the advent of alternative routes to teacher certification, the demise of traditional teacher education programs, and the need to provide for qualified teachers through a variety of induction methods, there is a concurrent need to identify the specific skills needed for teachers new to the program area.

The purpose of this project is to develop and validate competencies for the three subject-specific educational courses required for teacher certification in Marketing Education. These courses are Methods for Teaching Marketing Education, Curriculum for Marketing Education, and Marketing Internship. The new content and competency list will serve as the basis for teacher preparation either through stand alone courses, integration with existing courses, or as part of alternative teacher induction programs such as mentoring programs or new teacher institutes. The will provide guidelines for delivering a consistent level of preparation for teachers.

Initial competency development is being guided by an advisory committee of Marketing Education teachers and teacher educators. The project director is Dr. Larae Watkins, MCCE.
