NTI from an Administrator's Perspective

"The beginning teacher is expected to assume the same tasks and responsibilities as the most seasoned teacher on the staff."

                       - Harry and Rosemary Wong, The First Days of School

If you ponder this statement for any length of time, you will realize that quality training for new teachers is critical, not only for their own success in the classroom, but for the success of their students in both the classroom and the workplace. Therefore, it is important that new, alternatively certified teachers experience a comprehensive induction into their profession as career and technical educators. New Teacher Institute 2010 will accomplish this for you.

NTI has been totally revised for 2010. The entire focus is to help your new teachers acquire the necessary skills to manage their classrooms, to establish high expectations that support student technical skill attainment, to develop engaging lessons, and to deliver effective instruction.

This year, NTI will take place in Springfield, MO, from July 23rd through 29th, in a single event that wraps around the MoACTE Summer Conference and incorporates NTI instruction into MoACTE sessions. NTI participants will be enrolled in the NTI/Foundations of Education course (CTE 4140) through the University of Central Missouri. As before, the cost for the three credit hours is included in the NTI registration fee. However, there is one important change to note: there will be no callback sessions during the fall semester; all NTI instruction will take place during the seven days of this wrap-around MoACTE event. This will facilitate NTI students’ fall enrollment in one of the five additional courses required to complete their alternative certification.

The low NTI registration fee of $300 covers MoACTE Summer Conference registration, membership in the respective professional organization, lodging for the entire seven-day event, and most meals (breakfast each day, three lunches, and three dinner meals).  In addition, this seven-day commitment provides your new teachers a jump-start into teaching, three hours course credit, and a unique opportunity to interface and network with colleagues in their new profession.

Don’t delay in reserving a space for your new teachers.  NTI enrollment will be capped at 100 participants.  The deadline for enrollment is July 1st.

Finally, MCCE will again utilize experienced teacher leaders to facilitate small group interaction among NTI participants.  These teacher leaders enjoy the same benefits provided to NTI participants, and receive an additional stipend for their efforts.  Please encourage strong candidates to apply for this position.
